James Fletcher Civil War letter, June 1861.

A letter written by Corporal James Fletcher to Louisa Dougherty of Johnson, Vermont describing life in Camp Baxter, Saint Johnsbury, Vermont in June, 1861. He gives a detailed account of the daily schedule, including the time and number of roll calls and drills, and a description of the food, He includes a description of a disturbance in the camp on June 20th, with bricks and bottles being thrown.

James Fletcher was born around 1837 in Ohio, the son of John and Clarissa D. Fletcher. He resided in Belvidere, Vermont and enlisted in Company E, 3rd Vermont Infantry Regiment on June 1, 1861 as a corporal. He was promoted to Sergeant and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in Company I on January 8, 1864. He mustered out on July 27, 1864.
